Doctoral Center Sustainability Sciences

The Doctoral Center for Sustainability Sciences is a central scientific institution at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Engineers and scientists from the fields of civil engineering and transportation, electrical engineering, chemistry and biotechnology, plastics technology, and mechanical engineering work here alongside researchers from the social sciences, economics, humanities, and communication sciences, enabling transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary doctoral studies.

The focus is on application-oriented research into complex real-world problems that makes innovative contributions to sustainable development. The aim is to address social, socio-economic, engineering, and scientific issues in a disciplined and interdisciplinary manner. The focus is on methodological and content-related competencies that enable technological and social innovations based on transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration in research.

At the PZNW, students can earn the academic degree “Doctor of Sustainability Sciences” (Dr. rer. sust.), which is unique in Germany and was created specifically for the PZNW.

Vanessa Kokoschka gewinnt Doktorand:innenpreis - Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

Vanessa Kokoschka wins the 2025 Dissertation Prize of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK), worth EUR 500, for her publication: "Klimajournalismus auf Social Media. Ein plattformübergreifender Vergleich klimajournalistischer Formate für junge Zielgruppen auf Instagram, TikTok und YouTube".

The award ceremony took place during the annual conference of the Media Ethics Network and the DGPuK Communication and Media Ethics Section in Munich.

Ms. Kokoschka has been a doctoral candidate at the PZNW since December 2022 and is supervised by Prof. Dr. Lars Rademacher and Prof. Dr. Nazemi.
